The Muscogee Roller Girls took on the Middle Georgia Derby Demons this past weekend, in an intense bout that capped the decade long rivalry, they have with the team hailing from Macon, GA. MRG started it off with Hot Wheels Annie taking the jam line for MRG and Jam Jam Binx lining up alongside her. Hot Wheels fancy footwork got her past the formidable MGDD wall, giving her lead jammer status. Jam Jam was not far behind once she got past MRG’s last line of defense, MRG’s equally fleet footed blocker, Squeaks. With only seconds to spare, Hot Wheels Annie engaged her jam call off, stopping Jam Jam from scoring any points and putting 3 points on the board for MRG. Next on the jam line was MRG’s Loose Screws against MGDD’s Karmavore who just happened to be an ex MRG skater. Would she be able to use her knowledge of MRG’s game strategy to take the lead? Alas no! Loose Screws power moves sent an MGDD blocker tumbling and that was enough to get her through the pack to take the second lead jammer status of the night.
Karmavore was no match for MRG’s strong and powerful defensive wall. Bhad Juju, Scary Ann, Morgasmic, and Captain Jett Fuel held their wall in a formation so tight, it left Karmavore no choice but to attempt a panty pass to MGDD’s pivot, Sweet Amnesia. With panty in hand, Amnesia was able to charge past MRG’s defense and catch up to Loose Screws but not before Screws was able to take all four points and call of the jam. As the game progressed there was an amazing push from MGDD to take the lead and by half time they had succeeded. After half-time MRG Coach Vanilla Vice changed up his strategy to counteract the powerful jamming of Jam Jam Binx with MRG’s strongest blockers and MRG slowly began to chip away at the hard fought MGDD lead. Each jam brought MRG closer to a lead change and by the final two jams they were single digits from a lead change. With Jam Jam Binks once again on the line against Chrissi Blocksberg, everyone was on the edge of their seat! Jam Jam took lead and as Chrissi fought to get through the MGDD wall, Jam Jam had no luck completing her scoring pass against the punishing MRG wall.
When Chrissi Blocksberg managed to break through the pack, Jam Jam had no choice but to call off the jam and prevent Chrissy from scoring to the detriment of MGDD. The last and final face off on the jam line was between Hot Wheels and Karmavore. As the whistle blew and Wheels rushed the wall, the crowd went wild as she took lead. Karmavore pushed to get through but got a penalty, sending MRG into a final power jam! With only seconds left and MRG points piling on from the power jam, MRG took the lead and won the game! The final score was MRG 130, MGDD 128. Both teams put their heart and soul into the game and left it all on the track. It was a great day for Roller Derby and a fantastic win for MRG. Next bout is June 21st and these green machines will be taking on Huntsville, AL’s Rocket City Roller Derby. Don’t miss it!
